Stalking is an obsessional pattern of unwanted pursuit or repeated harassment that causes a victim to feel terrorized and to fear for his/her safety. Although it is an “old crime,” stalking did not receive much attention by the legal, criminal justice, or mental health communities until the early 1990’s. Since that time, laws have been established in every U.S. State identifying stalking as a crime. In 1997, The Center For Policy Research conducted a random survey that found that 8% of adult American women and 2% of adult American men have been stalked sometime in their lives. Research has found that stalking is a chronic traumatic event that can cause significant emotional distress, fear, and/or psychiatric symptoms for victims.
